Growing in Grace

We value the historic doctrines of Biblical Christianity and aim to help our families apply the teachings of Jesus to all areas of our lives. We try to balance sound, biblical understanding with exemplary living, so that we may in all ways honor our Savior.

Contemporary life is both complicated and confusing. It's hard to keep up with all of the newest technologies, changes, and discoveries. Every area of our lives seem to be fluid, rushing forward in an endless current. We live in a world that values the latest, most innovative, cutting edge technology. We assume everything new is best.

The past, though, holds value for us. It gives perspective and constancy to our lives. Having something unchanging in our lives gives us stability and helps us remain anchored in a life lived in transition. Most enduring of all is unchanging character of God and His unchanging Word. The Bible says,

The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. Psalm 18:2

God doesn't change. His nature, character, and purpose remains the same. His love remains the same. His holiness remains the same. Like a great rock that has weathered all storms, God is our security.

In the same way, God's Word recorded in the sixty-six books of the Bible remains the same. The instructions, commands, and teaching found in the Bible has endured through generations. The church has wrestled with these words and defended them for two thousand years. Jesus said,

"Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away." Matthew 24:35

As Smyrna Baptist Church we strive to teach accurately the Word of God, being consistent with the teachings the world-wide church has traditionally held regarding the central doctrines of the Bible.

Doctrine alone is only one aspect of rightly understanding the Scripture. It is essential to labor at having an accurate knowledge of what the Bible teaches about God, man, sin, salvation, the church, and the life to come. Knowledge alone is not enough. The second aspect of being Biblical Christians is living lives consistent with biblical commands and instructions.

Knowing and appreciating the teaching of the church throughout history helps us apply the Scriptures to the contemporary issues we face day by day. The Bible's teaching and God's presence give us the foundation for growing in our lives and families.
